Who We Are

Picture of Steve WinogradHi, I'm Steve Winograd, and I'm pleased to be part of Computer Haven. It's a warm, welcoming place that lets me take part in two of my favorite activities: computers and community.

I started working with computers when I entered college in 1968. I became involved in community (although we didn't call it that yet) the next year, when I got a job as a Programming Advisor, helping people find and fix problems in their FORTRAN and assembly language programs.

In the early days, I used paper tape, Teletype machines, punched cards, upper-case line printers, 110-baud acoustic modems, 7-track magnetic tape, graphics terminals with storage tubes, and other equipment that you can find in computer museums today. It's easy to be nostalgic about those things, but I wouldn't want to have to use them now!

I have a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and a Master's degree in Computer Science. I taught computer classes in graduate school and worked as a computer programmer for many years, specializing in programming languages, operating systems, and computer graphics.

I got my first Windows computer in 1997 and began helping some non-profit organizations with their computers. I soon discovered Usenet news groups and started asking and answering questions, learning, and sharing. I've been a big fan of on-line communities ever since. In October 1999, Microsoft recognized me (and Fearless Leader MacDuffie) as a Most Valuable Professional for the help that I give to people in communities, and I'm proud to have received the award each year since then.

In 2001, I started a consulting business, Boulder Computer Maven, helping home and small office users with Windows, hardware, software, Internet access, networking, etc.

When I'm not working with computers, I enjoy being with my wife Charmaine and our three cats and performing in choirs (including the nationally recognized Ars Nova Singers), early music ensembles, dance groups, and concert bands.
